South Carolina’s attorney Alex Murdaugh has been arrested at a Florida drug store for allegedly stealing insurance money in the death of a housekeeper.

A prominent South Carolina lawyer has been accused of stealing home insurance for the sons of a late security guard, state police said in China. Alex Murdaugh arrested at a drug control center in Orlando, Florida, authorities said. His lawyers said he had spent the past six weeks in the building since claiming he had been shot in the head on the side of a lonely road near his home.

The two arrests for possession of property and forgery involving Murdaugh’s homeowner for decades, Gloria Satterfield, said the State Law Enforcement Division in a statement.

Murdaugh told Satterfield’s sons at his funeral in February 2018 that he would get insurance for his death by taking care of them, as a complaint lodged by the sons.

Murdaugh was able to raise more than $ 4 million from his insurance company, but he only told the boys about $ 500,000 and never sent them a deal, he said in court.

The Murdaugh family told the boys whose mother had been upset with the family dog and died weeks later from his late injury. The death was never reported to the Hampton County coroner, who asked state police to investigate why he had not been called in to assess his thoughts on death by accident.

Murdaugh is being held in an Orange County jail in Florida awaiting deportation, investigators said. His lawyers promised a hearing on separate charges last month that Murdaugh would return to South Carolina without a fight if he was charged with extortion.

The death of Murdaugh’s wife and son at their Collleton County home in June remains unresolved. Murdaugh said he found Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and her son Paul, 22, shot dead after he returned home from visiting his father in a hospital, according to authorities.

Murdaugh’s lawyers, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, released a statement from China confirming the new case and said a bond deal was scheduled for Friday.

“Alex wants to co-operate with this investigation, as he did with the investigation into the murder of his wife and son,” he said. “He deeply regrets that his actions were incorrect in trying to justify his murder.”

State police have six investigations into Murdaugh, including his death and in September Murdaugh’s allegations of insurance fraud and other attempts to arrange his death so that his surviving son can receive life insurance worth 10 million dollars.

Murdaugh said his head was eaten by a bullet in the attempt. The man accused of shooting Murdaugh said the gun went off as he tried to prevent his friend from shooting himself.

Murdaugh’s lawyers said he had been suffering from chronic opioid addiction and wanted to end his life. In a statement released to CBS News last month, lawyers Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin stated:

On September 4, it became clear that Alex believed that ending his life was the only option. Today, he knows that it is not true. For the past two decades, there have been more and more people feeding on his opioid addiction. During that time, these people took advantage of his addiction and his ability to pay high bills for illicit drugs. One of the men took advantage of his mental illness and agreed to take Alex’s life, shooting him in the head. By the way, Alex was not killed by a gunshot wound.

China’s arrest is just one step away from a lengthy trial in both investigations, Chief Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel said in a statement.

“As I said before, we are committed to following the truth wherever they lead us and we will not stop until justice is done,” Keel said.
