SNL says what we all thought in his billionaire Star Trek sketch

Saturday night live returned this weekend and the show wasted no time targeting the weird billionaires space tourism race that has been going on over the past few months. Guest host Owen Wilson played former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a sketch about a fictional new show called Star Trek: Ego Quest, about “the journeys of the SS New Shepard and their crew of random spinners,” whose mission it is to “just fly through space and screw up in a ship that looks like a penis,” according to the voice-over.

You will remember the real Bezos traveled to the edge of space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket in July, along with a crew that included his brother Mark (played by Wilson’s brother Luke in the sketch) 82-year-old pilot and space belonged to legend Wally Funk and Dutch high school student Oliver Daemen. But Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin Galactic, knocked Bezos into space by a few days when he took a trip aboard his company’s SpaceShipTwo spaceplane. And SpaceX sent its first crew of private individuals into space earlier this month, but CEO Elon Musk didn’t join them.

In the SNL sketch, Branson (Alex Moffatt), flying nearby in a ship with purple mood lighting, challenges Bezos to a race after exchanging some standard brother greetings for what the voiceover calls “midlife.” Crisis of cosmic proportions “. in which they accidentally fall into the international space station. But wait, there is danger lurking around every corner: suddenly Bezos’ ship is shot at by photon torpedoes and yes, of course it is Elon Musk (Mikey Day, who accurately depicts Musk’s speaking style).

“The room is only big enough for a white, strange billionaire,” says “Musk” to “Bezos”.

In reality, of course, neither Bezos nor Musk had much humor about each other’s space aspirations. “You can’t sue your way to the moon,” the real Musk told journalist Kara Swisher in an interview last week when talking about Bezos and Blue Origin. In response, Amazon sent The edge a 13-page PDF listing of all the times SpaceX filed lawsuits.

the SNL Sketch dealt Bezos one final blow before it gets finished: an Amazon employee (Kenan Thompson) beams himself aboard Bezos’ ship to deliver a package, and before beaming out, he asks to go to the bathroom .

Wilson-as-Bezos throws him a plastic bottle.
