Raymond T. Odierno, Chief of Staff who helped organize the Iraq War strategy, dies at 67

Gen. Odierno did not lose interest in the War games and was always on the sidelines of football matches, sometimes joining in the players’ seeds. In 2012, when he was chief of staff, he spoke to the Army football team ahead of a game against a service-academy competing in the Air Force. Former military football player John “JT” Thomson, the current three-star football director, was in the locker room that day. After Gen Odierno’s encouraging remarks, the Armed Forces passed the Air Force, 41-21.
