Leon Cooperman and his family donate US $ 100 million to hospital

Wall Street icon Leon Cooperman and his wife Toby gave a $ 100 million gift to a New Jersey hospital now being renamed after the family.

The Cooperman Family Foundation’s donation to Saint Barnabas Medical Center is the largest ever made to a state hospital. The hospital will now be called Cooper Barnabas Medical Center.

“The Cooperman family has helped us become the prestigious institution we are today,” said Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, in a statement. “Today’s generous gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman is transformative and ensures our medical center continues to evolve as a state-of-the-art medical campus and leader in protecting and supporting community health.”

The Coopermans raised their children in Essex County, where the medical center is located, and have previously donated to Barnabas more than 100 times. However, CBMC chairman Bruce Schonbraun said their latest donation marks “a turning point” for the facility.

Mr. Cooperman spent 25 years building Goldman Sachs’ wealth management division before founding the Omega Advisors hedge fund in 1991, Tore.

“I’m at a point in my life where I want my gifts to really make an impact, and I couldn’t think of a better way than to make this healthcare investment in the community that has given so much to our family . ” said Leon Cooperman. “The pandemic has shown us that heroes work in our hospitals every day and I am honored to support their work.”
