Kamala Harris skips a US-Mexico border-protection conference, heading to New Jersey instead

Several senior members of the Biden administration were in Mexico City on Friday for a meeting with Mexican officials regarding security at the US-Mexico border. But Deputy President Kamala Harris was not among them.

Harris, appointed by President Biden in March to address the US response to the refugee crisis at the border, traveled to New Jersey.

Attending Friday’s high-profile talks in Mexico City were Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Ken Salazar, former U.S. senator from Colorado who is now serving as US ambassador to Mexico, also attended.

“Today’s High-Level Security Dialogue highlights an important role in US-Mexico relations,” Mayorkas posted Friday. “We will work together under the new framework to guide our unity, and to work towards our shared goals for the sustainability and prosperity of our two countries.”

Harris, however, went to Garden State, visiting a childcare center at Montclair State University in Little Falls and a virus prevention center at Essex County Community College in Newark to promote the Biden program.

The vice president last visited the border in June, spending several hours in El Paso, Texas, on his way home to California. It was the only time he ever went to the border since he started work.

He went to Los Angeles again the following week, spending the July vacation at his home.

Harris has faced constant criticism from Republicans, who say his evasion of the border has deprived him of valuable first-hand information on border issues.

“Deputy President Harris is indifferent to the real problems near our southern border that is not protected by the border wall and is being overrun by a system of thoughtless, open coalition government,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. ahead of his last trip in June.

Harris and his spokespersons argued that he looked at post-militant talks with Latin American leaders about the “reasons” for migration, such as poverty and political corruption in countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Perhaps in making the GOP criticism, Harris told potential expatriates, “Don’t come” to the US when he visited Guatemala in early June.

He also raised eyebrows at the questions asked by reporters about the border at the time.

“I’ve never been to Europe. I mean, I don’t understand the point you’re making,” Harris laughed at a question from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt about whether he planned to go to the border before June. a visit to Texas was arranged.

“Since March, Deputy Prime Minister Kamala Harris has been leading the Department’s initiative to address the reasons for relocation from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras,” the White House said in a statement during the summer promoting its Root Rooting program. “She has worked with international, multilateral, and non-governmental organizations, as well as leaders of non-governmental organizations, to help people from the region find hope at home.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a Fox News nightly request to comment.
