On October 4, a wildfire pushed north and caused injuries in Redwood Canyon, the National Park Service told CNN in a statement. The fire has covered over 85,000 acres.
At present, the exact number of burnt trees is unknown because the fire was not fully rectified, but the NPS said it was a significant number – in the hundreds.
Burned by lightning in September, the KNP Complex Fire is the latest in a series of wild forest fires, among the largest trees in the world. The Windy Fire, also burning in Sequoia National Park, killed at least 27 large sequoias, and last year, the Castle Fire destroyed between 7500 and 10,600 trees, representing about 10-14% of the world’s quoia population.
The tree is 25 feet tall, and 30 feet wide.
The service plans to fully assess the damage to trees when a “cold” fire, sometime in 2022.
Currently, 2,069 workers are working to put out the fire, NPS said, and in rigid, inaccessible areas, workers are dropping fire-fighting gel and helicopters on poles, but the smoke has made this difficult to do.
Firefighters injured China and were rushed to hospital after being hit by a fallen tree, according to firefighters. One CalFire employee, while the other three are members of the California Conservation Corps, the release was reported.
He was released from hospital on Friday.
Despite the extreme fires, Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League, explained that fire is not the enemy of the giant sequoias, noting that these trees have survived through mass fires and often respond well to fires of moderate weight. .
Just a few months after the Castle Fire last year, a carpet of baby giant sequoias was shot up from the ground when a devastating fire broke out.
And although giant sequoias are associated with occasional fires, the bark usually protects the trees from serious damage and can protect them from wildfires, the NPS said. Over time, however, it may be difficult for trees to heal after centuries of fire scars.
